The mother of an 11-year-old girl who died in her home is being treated in hospital.
Gardaí said they are not seeking to interview anyone else in connection with the girl's death in Tullamore, Co Offaly, last night.
It is understood the girl was an only child.
Officers will speak to the 54-year-old woman after she has undergone medical attention.
The girl was found in the house in the Bachelor's Walk area of the town. An ambulance had been called to the home at about 9pm and gardaí also attended the scene.
The girl was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore where she was pronounced dead.
The woman, a well-known local GP, was being treated at the same hospital.
A post-mortem examination was taking place in the hospital today and the Garda Technical Bureau and the State Pathologist are to conduct forensic examinations at the home.
Superintendent John Moloney, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that the mother was taken to intensive care in the hospital.
"At 9.30pm local gardaí and ambulance crews were called to the house. They found a woman and child unconscious," he said.
"The lady in question is in intensive care in hospital."
Local representatives who declined to be named said the entire town had been left in extreme and complete shock over the death.
