SINGING sensation and Naas native Sharon Sexton is on her way back to the West End having secured a role in Billy Elliot one of the most celebrated and award winning musicals currently on stage in London.
Sharon is currently in rehearsals for the part of Billy’s deceased mother and will take over the role in the production next month , just in time for the 10 year anniversary of the London show
“I have seen the show twice, and both times I have been a crying mess in the audience during the duet between Billy and his mum,” said Sharon.
“I barely got through the audition rounds without shedding tears, so I just hope I’ll be able to keep it together while singing it on stage!”
32-year old Sharon is a huge fan of the music in the show. “The music is beautiful and the story is gorgeous. It is a real uplifting message about being who you are and following your dreams. I am so excited and proud to be a part of it.”
Based on the hit movie, the stage show’s music was written by Sir Elton John and has been dazzling
audiences for over ten years, recently being broadcast live to over 550 cinema’s worldwide.
Billy Elliot tells the story of a young boy living in a small mining town in the North of England during the depression of the 1980s. Despite his circumstances, Billy follows his dream to pursue his passion for dancing, encouraged by his local dance teacher and the spirit of his mum, who is deceased, but very much with him on his journey.
Sharon’s most recent role was her her portrayal of Conchita Alvarez in a touring production of Barry Manilow’s musical Copacabana.
She made her West End Debut in 2013, in the smash hit musical adaptation of Roddy Doyle’s The Commitments.
Before leaving Ireland she enjoyed great success in Ireland, with many credits to her name including her leading stage roles in IKEANO, the Gaiety pantomime, Anglo The Musical, Girls Night The Musical and Oliver in The National Concert Hall. But she is probably best known for her award winning portrayal of the musical legend Liza Minnelli in Somewhere Over The Rainbow, The Liza Minelli Story.
