THE old man sitting next to us never moved. He never spoke, he never flinched. The only hint that he was from Tyrone was a slight clap when Brian Dooher kicked a score. After that game I congratulated him and asked him was he always this quiet during a game.

I REMEMBER a number of years ago we played Mayo in a challenge game in Rath-coffey. It was one of those pre-season efforts in bad weather and both sides were trying out new players before the start of the league. At half-time Johnny Doyle said something that came to my mind this week.

A NEW venue and a new challenge await the Lily-whites this Saturday as they face Laois in the semi-final of the Leinster championship. The fact that we face our near neighbours with a final berth at stake adds a little more spice to an already eagerly awaited clash.

I’M tempted to say that the ref rode us against Wexford. The free count was staggering. There’s no getting away from the fact that we got less than 10 frees in over 70 minutes of championship football while our opponents got nearly four times as many.
