POSTERS bearing the words ‘We’re Not Paying the Household Tax’ were distributed in Newbridge over the weekend as the anti-charges campaign stepped up a gear at local level.

Following a meeting at Hotel Keadeen last Tuesday night, which drew a large crowd of around 300 people from around the entire county, a follow-up meeting is being held in Newbridge tonight (Tuesday 7 February). The meeting will take place at Johnson’s (The Liffey Arms) at Lower Main Street, starting at 7.30pm and the aim will be to devise an active campaign against the household charge in the Newbridge area.

According to local organiser Elaine Daly: “If you interested in getting involved, through leaflet dropping in Newbridge housing estates, knocking on doors or manning a stall in Newbridge on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, please come along.”

She added that anyone who could not make it along to tonight’s meeting was welcome to contact her about getting involved.

Stressing that she was not a member of any political party Ms Daly said that this would be “a community campaign” and she added that people living elsewhere in the county could also contact her with a view to setting up meetings in their own areas. “The idea is that we can work together to spread the message across the whole of the county,” she said.

Tonight’s meeting is open to all, while Elaine Daly can be contacted on 086 1568234.
