A CAR parked in the Bert area of Athy was hit when a shot was fired from a shotgun in an apparently random drive-by shooting last Sunday evening.
The incident occurred at approximately 6.30pm on Sunday 19 February and the car was unoccupied at the time.
Sergeant James Bergin from Athy Garda Station told the Kildare Nationalist that gardaí are at a loss as to why the car was shot at. “It appears that a car was driving along the road and a shot was fired at the parked car. Local residents in the area reported that two more shots were discharged around the same time. The injured party in this case is completely innocent and there is no known explanation as to why this car was shot at. The car was taken away for forensic analysis but at this stage we have ascertained that the shot was fired from a shotgun.”
Sgt Bergin went on to say that at this point in time they are not following any definite line of enquiry and he appealed for anyone who was in the area at the time who may have witnessed anything suspicious to make themselves known to gardaí.
