KILDARE students, 22-year-old Wesley Carroll and 18-year-old Sarah McDermott, are hoping their specs appeal will bring them a top modelling contract after being chosen from hundreds of hopefuls to become regional finalists in the Spectacles Wearer of the Year 2010 contest.

Wesley, from Maddenstown, Kildare, was entered in Tiger Lilys nightclub in Kildare.

“There were Specsavers reps there, promoting it. They had a table with lots of glasses for people to try on and they took digital photos, and had entry forms there too.

“They called me in Calvin Klein where I work and told me I had been selected. I’m nervous about the final though. As far as I know, each finalist has to create two looks, one casual, the other suit, and then chat with the judges. I’ve still not decided who’s coming up with me, as finalists can only bring one guest.”

Unfortunately not all the prizes are totally suitable for Wesley. “A lot of it is make-up! If I win, I’ll probably give it to my sister.”

Sarah McDermott, of Walshestown Park, Newbridge, completed her Leaving Cert in the Holy Family school this year. She entered online. “I just spotted it somewhere online, I sent in a photo and my details and I got an email confirming my entry. Next thing I know, the woman from the PR called me to say I was a finalist. I’m absolutely thrilled! I’ll be going up with my mam.”

The casual section of the final requires the finalists to wear just plain jeans and they will be given a t shirt with the slogan Spectacle Wearer of the Year 2010 on it, and the second look will be created by stylists from the Dundrum centre.

Sarah, who works as a part time receptionist for Toyota Showrooms in Kildare, says it will be a great opportunity to meet people and get exposure.

The regional final will be held at Specsavers in Dundrum Town Centre this Thursday 2 September. Specsavers’ ambassador and presenter of hit show How To Look Good Naked, Gok Wan, will be presenting the award to the winning finalist.
