CASTLEDERMOT Tidy Town’s committee celebrated their fifth Anniversary and the presentations of their garden competition prizes in The Mad Hatter Cafe, Castledermot, on Monday 24 August.
There a great turnout and all enjoyed some beautiful home baking prepared by Alice and her husband Fiachra.
Chairperson Rachel Hott welcomed all including Cllrs Mark Wall, Mark Dalton and Martin Heydon.
Outgoing chairperson Mary Holligan spoke about the work of the group over the past five years. Mary had been in the chair for the last five years and worked very hard with her committee to get the group off the ground.
Some of their achievements include developing the green, the clean-up of the river and work on The Laurels which now look lovely. The Baltinglass Road was also targeted by the group and it is now looking very attractive.
They also turned their attention to the Pound, which has been cleaned and will be developed in the coming months. Footpaths at Carlow Gate to the school are nearing completion and the second ramp at the school will be put in place in the next couple of weeks thanks to the assistance of Cllr Heydon.
The Tidy Towns Committee has also continued to keep the village clean and each year they have the flower pots looking wonderful right through the summer months. She thanked Mary Anita Curran and Mary Agnes Nolan who adjudicated the garden competition. She also thanked the committee and volunteers for their support and looked forward to continuing to work with them in the future.
The presentation of prizes then took place and were made by PRO Joan Horan to the winners. The full list of winners were:
Best large garden: Tony and Trish Proctor, Barnhill.
Best small garden: Pat and Mary Leigh, Abbeylands. Best kept business premises: The Granite House. Most improved area: Barnhill. Best children’s flowerpot: Scott Bolagh, William Pearse Terrace.
Following the presentations incoming chairperson Rachel Hott stressed that Tidy Towns would continue to liaise with the newly formed development committee and work with them for the future development of the village, and at the same time maintain what they already achieved and endeavour to make Castledermot a better place for their children to grow up in a village to be very proud of.
The next meeting of Tidy Towns is on Tuesday 21 September at 8pm in the community centre. All are welcome, and new volunteers especially welcome.
