CBS Naas senior rugby team were victorious against Newpark Comprehensive in the semi-final of the McMullen Cup which was played on Monday 14 December at Ballycorus.
The game was played with great tension and excitement. Naas flanker, Lorcan Murphy, took the chance and scored from an interception. Out-half Robert Campbell slotted the conversion for a 7 – 0 lead in the 18th minute.
Newpark backrower, Zac Jungmann scored a try, closing the divide to two points. Just before half time, Naas out-half, Robert Campbell scored a penalty, moving Naas on to a two score gap.
Ten minutes into the second half, Fionán Leahy scored a penalty – making life more difficult for the Blackrock-based school. Naas centre Conor Fitzsimons’ magnificent tackling, closed down the dangerous Newpark midfield.
Despite Newpark scoring a penalty in the last three minutes, Naas CBS were valiant with the match ending on a score line of CBS Naas 13 Newpark 8. Naas CBS manager Joe Kelly stated that his senior rugby team had beaten three traditional rugby schools who have won three of the last four McMullen Cups. The McMullan Cup final is due to be played in January 2010.
