A YOUNG Kildare man who told Carlow District Court that he studies “charts and stocks” was convicted and fined for a speeding offence. Michael James Connell (23), Canal Walk, Athy was present in court for the case before Judge Geraldine Carthy.

The court heard that the defendant, who holds a provisional licence, had received a fixed-charge notice in relation to the matter. Judge Carthy asked him whether he had seen the form attached that would have allowed him to pay the fine, which he confirmed he had.

“I tried my best,” Judge Carthy remarked.

Asked by the judge what he did for a living, the defendant initially indicated that he was studying, prompting Judge Carthy to ask what course he was taking in college.

“I study charts and stocks,” he replied. “I’m not in college.” Judge Carthy convicted Mr Connell of the speeding offence and imposed a fine of €101. She noted that he would also receive penalty points.
