There will definitely be a Kildare winner in this year's Sigerson Cup after Raheens' Niall Dolan and Caragh's Darragh Swords played their part in setting up a Dublin derby in the final when DCU overcame reigning champions Ulster University in Thursday evening's semi-final.
Just as in the first semi-final, the game finished in a draw but unlike in the first semi-final, which went all the way to penalties, DCU were able to get on top after that and they pulled away to win 0-14 to 0-10.
Dolan has been a regular starter for DCU through the competition and he played 45 minutes before being replaced by his fellow Kildare men.
Swords went on to contribute a point in extra time.
With Sarsfields' Callum Bolton a key man for UCD and James McGrath also on their squad, there will definitely be Sigerson Cup winners medals coming back to county.
Kevin Flynn (DCU) was the last Kildare winner in 2020. Brian Byrne won with UCD in 2018. David Hyland and Niall Kelly were part of the UCD team that beat a DCU side containing their Athy and Kildare team-mate Kevin Feely in 2016. Clane's Tomás O'Connor was part of the DIT team that won in 2013 and Celbridge's Hugh McGrillen was a winner with DCU in 2010.
Next Wednesday's final, in Connacht GAA at 7.30pm, and will be another fantastic experience for these up and coming young players.
