Duo accused of attempting to assist Portlaoise prison break

TWO men who allegedly attempted to assist a breakout from Portlaoise Prison were sent forward for trial to the 28 October sitting of Portlaoise Circuit Criminal Court.
The men were before last week’s sitting of Portlaoise District Court where they were served with books of evidence.
Desmond Collins (20) from 31 Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra, Weston, Limerick, and Michael Shannon (29) from 80 Lenihan Avenue, Prospect, Limerick, were both accused of taking part in arrangements for enabling another person to escape from lawful custody by attempting to convey 11 mobile phones and a make-shift knife, chisel and screwdriver on 17 December 2024 at Borris Road, Portlaoise.
Both accused were also charged with possessing heroin and cannabis for sale or supply and for their own use, on the same date in the same location.
Sending both men forward to the next sitting of the circuit court, Judge Susan Fay instructed the defendants that they must notify gardaí in writing within 14 days if they wished to rely on an alibi in their defence.
