Father and son duo help Sarsfields to dramatic Reserve League Final success
Ray Cahill enjoys winning the Reserve Football League Division 6 Final with his son, Oisin
Former Kildare star Ray Cahill enjoyed a winning moment with his son Oisin as Sarsfields beat Athy in a dramatic Reserve Football League Division 6 Final in Kilcullen this evening.
Cahill, a multiple SFC title winner with his club, contributed two points for Sarsfields but they needed an injury-time TJ Donohoe goal to secure a 1-12 to 1-11 over an Athy side who looked set for victory for most of the second half.
The younger Cahill played at full-back and enjoyed a keen tussle with Athy full-forward Danny O’Keefe.
O’Keefe, who famously scored the decisive goal for Athy in the 2020 county final, had looked like being the matchwinner when his 51st minute goal put Athy in charge before Sarsfields, for whom former Kildare man Gary White scored three two-pointers, came storming back.
O’Keefe and the younger Cahill spent the final ten minutes or so of the game at each other’s throats and one off the ball incident ended with both going into the referee’s notebook. However, in a true show of sportsmanship, the moment the final whistle was blown the pair shook hands, embraced and were all smiles after clearly enjoying their running battle.
It’s a first medal at senior level for Oisin Cahill and while he has a bit to go to catch up on his father, he is up and running now.
