The Coolmore-owned colt leaves opponents friendless in the betting market Friday 22nd May - Gstaad is hot favourite for tomorrow’s Irish 2,000 Guineas, while all other runners in the race remained largely unbacked.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt is set to become the handler’s 13th winner of the race and sits at a price of 4/9. His next closest market rival is no closer than 4/1 with 24 hours to go until the Group One contest, which is run over a mile at 3.40pm on Saturday.
Gstaad returned to action in the English 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, finishing second to George Boughey’s Bow Echo, and is anticipated to go one better this weekend on his way to Royal Ascot next month. The son of Starspangledbanner was a winner at the Royal meeting as a juvenile, succeeding in the Coventry Stakes.
Godolphin’s Distant Storm, trained by Charlie Appleby, is a distant second in the betting at 4/1, having finished third in the Newmarket 2,000 Guineas, followed by 8/1 shot Thesecretadvisory and 9/1 Alparslan. The remaining six runners in the Irish 2,000 Guineas are at double-figure odds.
Ryan Moore will take the ride on Gstaad and, should the three-year-old win, would add a fourth Irish 2,000 Guineas victory onto his list of achievements.
