AMY Larn made her Olympic debut this evening for the Ireland Womens Rugby 7s team as they were beaten 40-7 by Australia in the quarter-finals in the Stade de France.

The 20-year-old from Athy travelled with the squad as a reserve but an injury to captain Lucy Mulhall Rock during Monday's win over South Africa opened the door for Larn.

She was an unused substitute when Ireland pushed Australia much harder in the last group game earlier on Monday, before they eventually lost 19-14.

Larn got her chance near the final minute of the quarter-final and whatever she goes on to achieve in the exciting sporting career ahead of her, she will always be remembered as an Olympian.

Even though Ireland can no longer win a medal, the Olympics are not over for the team and they go into the section of the competition that they will decide places from fifth to eighth. They play host nation France tomorrow at 2pm and win or lose will have another game later in the evening to decide their final placing.
