Proponents of the flags say they signify patriotism and national pride; but opponents argue they are designed to intimidate immigrants.

The Taoiseach has used a speech to criticise the use of the Irish flag to suggest there is ‘a fixed national identity’.

It comes as flags have been flown across Ireland in a move interpreted as expressing concern around immigration into the country.

Police are treating the incident as a sectarian motivated hate crime.
