At least 18 hospitals around the country are limiting the number of visitors to one per patient.

The HSE said the situation was 'quite stark' in the past week alone for the age 75 and over category.

Last winter, over 4,000 people were hospitalised with the flu, and more than 7,000 required hospital treatment for Covid-19.
