The INMO says University Hospital Limerick accounts for the highest number of those, at 79.

There has been a focus on overcrowding at Limerick University Hospital in recent years.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation's (INMO) Trolley watch figures show 344 patients were waiting in emergency departments, while 138 are in wards elsewhere in the hospital.

A total of 102 of those patients were based in University Hospital Limerick, 54 at University Hospital Galway and 44 at Sligo University Hospital.

That is an increase of 57 on on Tuesday's figures.
