A MAN was successful in his application for an interim protection order against his wife and was surprisingly followed by his daughter who was equally successful in her appeal for one against her brother.

“Why do you want the court to protect you from your wife?” asked Judge Desmond Zaidan during Family Law hearings at a recent sitting Naas District Court.

“It’s not really for me, for my two daughters,” he said.

“My wife is drinking a lot, and the young lad is doing coke,” he said.

The man then told the judge that his daughters were both young adults, and the judge had to tell him that the eldest is an adult and can apply for and order independently herself – which she would a little later.

'Threw a bottle'

“My wife is very violent,” said the man.

“She beat you up?” asked the judge.

“Every weekend. She would hit you or pour something on you,” said the man.

“At the door on Sunday she was shouting and roaring at the young one, and I said it’s your fault, you’re always drinking and blackguarding, and she threw a bottle at me.

“She has a barring order out. Our son put hands on her so she got the order,” he revealed.

This was enough for the judge, and he granted an interim protection order until at least 22 June when a full hearing will be held on the matter.

Immediately after, his daughter took the stand and asked for a protection order against her brother.

She explained how “he’s sleeping on the sofa, taking cocaine. Seven months ago he assaulted our mother, and yet our father got the barring order. How do I get it lifted?”

Judge Zaidan explained that her father would have to apply for that himself, but granted the daughter her wish for an order of protection against her brother nonetheless.
