A MAN charged with the assault of three gardaí, and causing €1,200 damage to a Newbridge pub on Monday, claimed facial injuries were caused “by a big German or Turk”, a court was told.

Richard Ryan (34) with an address at Cherry Vale, Ballyhaunis, Co Mayo appeared in Naas District Court on Thursday (9 July) from custody following his eventual arrest and detention three day previously.

Mr Ryan is charged with three counts of assault causing harm to to three gardaí at Flanagan’s, Eyre Street, Newbridge on the afternoon of 6 July “who were on high visibility patrol” at the time.

He is also charged with €1,200 worth of damage to glasses and a Guinness tap after throwing a keg, as well as obstruction, resisting arrest, being drunk in public, and threatening and abusive behaviour.

“Ryan got violent…and had to be arrested,” said Sergeant Dave Hanrahan, after outlining the eight offences before the court.

“These are serious allegations, a number of gardaí ended up in treatment,” said Judge Desmond Zaidan who had formally detained him on Tuesday at a special sitting.

“I note the cuts on your face, but when I refused you bail I directed that you be sent to Naas General Hospital,” added the judge.

“I have glass fragments in my elbow, but the guards didn’t want me treated there,” claimed Mr Ryan on videolink.

“I’m surprised,” said the judge. “Because the doctors could’ve overridden the guards."

“The state is taking a risk, if that is the case,” warned Judge Zaidan.

“In fairness, you pointed out all your injuries and told me about the others, and you did tell me it wasn’t the guards did this, but some big German or Turk,” sad the judge.

“I remember he said when he woke up in the cell and it looked like a bloodbath."

Addressing a prison officer positioned off camera, Judge Zaidan said: “Mr Ryan has told me there are glass fragments in his elbow ...

“I don’t know if this is true, but can you notify your medical personnel about this?”

The prison officer said he would, and led Mr Ryan away for at least another week in custody as the case was adjourned until this Thursday 16 July for the defendant to appear by video link.
