Cathal McCarthy was an unused substitute for Hull City during today's scoreless draw with Coventry City

Cathal McCarthy was an unused substitute for Hull City as they began the Championship season with a goalless draw away to Coventry City this afternoon.

The 18-year-old from Caragh joined the club last January but remained in Ireland on loan to UCD as he completed his Leaving Cert in Naas CBS.

He moved to England to link up with Hull at the start of the summer and wasted no time in catching the eye of manager Sergej Jakirović and the Hull supporters with some impressive displays during the pre-season.

That was enough to earn him a place on the bench for today’s game where he was joined by experienced Championship campaigners such as Ireland international John Egan and recent high profile signings Oli McBurnie and Joe Gelhardt.

Hull only stayed up on the final day of last season but seem to have made astute purchases during the pre-season and look to have the potential to be much further up the table this season and McCarthy will hope to continue to impress enough to soon make his competitive debut.
