Former president Michael D Higgins has said his dog Misneach is "settling in very well into his new Galway home" as he shared a snap of his post-presidential life.

Mr Higgins served two terms as President of Ireland and his Bernese Mountain Dogs caught the hearts of the nation and even made international news.

Bród and Síoda have sadly passed away but Misneach was with Mr Higgins and his wife Sabina as they departed Áras an Uachtaráin.

In a heartwarming moment, members of the public brought their own Bernese Mountain Dogs to form a guard of honour as Mr Higgins departed the presidential residence.

In a post on Instagram, Mr Higgins shared a photo of himself with Misneach in their new home in his native Galway, captioned: "Misneach settling in very well into his new Galway home and looking forward to meeting with old friends and new. Casann an roth!"

Mr Higgins' successor, President Catherine Connolly, had her first major engagement today as Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy made an official visit to Áras an Uachtaráin.
