'A tireless fundraiser' - tributes paid to beloved Kildare man

Tributes have been paid to a beloved well-known figure in south Kildare.

John Donovan of Ballytore passed away sadly yesterday. John had raised funds for a host of good causes through the years including raising €24,000 St Brigid’s Hospice in the Curragh following the passing of his adored wife Kay.

John had active members of St Laurence’s GAA while working in the old Kelly’s Bar in Narraghmore, now known as Mels.

He had batted cancer in recent years. He was very active in local community groups and charities for which he received a hero award in the Athy Municipal District.

Paying tribute to John on social media, St Laurence’s GAA said: “John was a true gentleman and a ray of sunshine to be with. He was a keen clubman and a great supporter of the club and local community. He was a tireless fundraiser and good cause ambassador to all that knew him.” 

 John is survived by his children Ann-Marie, Martha and Billy, brother Liam, sister Lily, sons-in-law Joseph and Niall, daughter-in-law Lindsey, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren Ella, Lucas, Kaylee, Aoibhinn, Saoirse, Michael and Thomas, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

John will repose at his residence between 2-8pm today and tomorrow.

Removal on Friday morning to arrive at St. Ita's Church, Kilmeade for Requiem Mass at 11am, the Mass will be livestreamed, see link https://www.narraghmoreandmoone.ie/. Burial afterwards in the adjoining Cemetery.

Donations if desired can be made to another cause John had previously raised funds for, the ASD unit at Scoil Ide Naofa, Kilmead.
