Another arrest will mean jail for street drinking Athy man

Athy Courthouse
AN intoxicated man who was arrested and then spat on the cell walls was given a Peace Bond after he said he was going to rehab but warned “if you’re seen drunk in public again, you will go to prison”.
Athy District Court was told how 34-year-old Patrick Mackey of Cluain Bhearu, Athy was so drunk at an unnamed location in the town on 1 March that he was arrested for his own safety.
Then, when incarcerated for the night, began spitting on the cell walls, which cost €150 to have them safely cleaned, according to Sergeant Dave Hanrahan.
“He doesn’t remember it, he was so highly intoxicated. He’s here with his dad, who is an absolute gent,” said solicitor Jackie McManus.
“Please don’t tell me you’re an alcoholic?” asked Judge Desmond Zaidan. “I don’t think so,” said Mr Mackey. “He was falling down drunk, fell over, hit his head,” said Sgt Hanrahan. Ms McManus told the court that Mr Mackey Snr had five children, while her client has four. “I’m going to AA,” said the father. “I’m going to Cuan Mhuire,” said the defendant.
“It’s a good place, but you look fairly healthy,” said the judge. As he was pleading guilty, Sgt Hanrahan was able to reveal that the defendant had 15 previous convictions, all for road traffic offences.
Turning back to the defendant, the judge said: “you have four kids, grow up!” He added: “I’m going to put you on a Peace Bond for 12 months, the lesser of two evils, but if you’re seen drunk in public again and brought back before me, you will go to jail. Stop abusing alcohol. You grew up with it in his time, think of all that stuff swept under the carpet.” Turning to the sergeant. “This morning’s session is more of a counselling session,” he smiled.
