The rollercoaster ride that is the promotion race in Division 3 of the Allianz Football League took another huge twist today when Clare were beaten by relegation threatened Sligo by 1-19 to 2-14.
Keelan Sexton’s last gasp winning goal for Clare against Kildare last Sunday catapulted them right into the promotion mix but they couldn’t follow that up with a win over a Sligo team who had taken just one point from their opening four games.
The impact on the promotion race is huge.
With two rounds to go, Kildare and Offaly top the table on eight points while just behind them are Laois and Clare on six points.
Intriguingly, those four teams are in opposition next weekend.
The results of the games between Laois and Clare, in Portlaoise on Saturday evening, and Offaly versus Kildare, in Tullamore on Sunday afternoon, will go a long way to deciding the promotion places.
But already, there have been so many twists and turns in this promotion and there are sure to be many more to come.
