Carlow GAA hero Sean Gannon has been appointed manager of Kildare senior football champions in his first role as manager.

Gannon enjoyed a long and glittering playing career for Éire Óg and Carlow and steps into role the manager of a team who went all the way to a Leinster final and immediately he will plenty in common with his new club.

Athy lost that Leinster final last year to Ballyboden St Endas and it was the same club who defeated Gannon and Éire Óg when he reached the final as a player in 2019.

In a statement today, Athy said:

“Athy GAA are delighted to announce Seán Gannon as the new Senior Football Manager.

“A former Carlow senior footballer and Éire Óg stalwart, Seán brings elite experience, having won 8 Carlow SFC titles, captaining 5 of them. He is the only Carlow football AIB Club All-Star and a five-time Carlow Senior Footballer of the Year.

“Alongside his playing career, he has coached across all levels of the game and is widely regarded for his modern approach, strong focus on player development, high standards and attention to detail.

“Welcome to Peil Áth Í, Seán.”

Four of those Carlow titles, as well as that 2019 Leinster Final, were under the management of Joe Murphy and Gannon will now look to emulate the success that his clubman enjoyed in Kildare with Naas where he won two county titles.
