Athy Canal Side housing refurbishment

Kildare County Council is currently assessing the potential for remedial works on housing units in Canal Side, Athy.

The plan is to provide one and two-bedroom housing units either by way of refurbishment or reconstruction. 

The motion was brought to the Athy MD meeting by cathaoirleach Aoife Breslin, who said: “It would be great to see people getting forever homes in this area.” 

In response, the council explained that engineering consultant has been engaged by the council to assess the structural conditions of the houses to determine if the current building fabric is suitable for retention and to provide guidance on remedial works that might have to be carried out.

The council's architectural services department will also be engaging a conservation architect to prepare reports for the units, as they are located within an architectural conservation area. 

Kildare County Council's architectural services department have also spoken with the planning department to determine an approach to the houses.
