A MAN sentenced to 10 months in prison for dangerous driving, and driving whilst uninsured will not have to spend any longer in jail than he is already serving, as his release date for his present sentence is December 2026.

Athy District Court heard how Michael Brennan (43) from Gallow’s Hill in Athy was stopped on Bóthair Buí in the town after driving through a red light onto the Dublin Road on 15 August 2024, and then tested for having cocaine in his system.

It was then revealed that Mr Brennan was also stopped on the Geraldine Road in Athy on 14 April this year where he had no insurance, no licence, or no working headlights.

As Mr Brennan was appearing in court from the custody dock, his solicitor Jackie McManus told the court that “my client is currently serving a two-year sentence handed down at Naas Circuit Court in June. Judge, he is doing very well, he is on the enhanced landing, and is working in the prison kitchens. He has a release date in December 2026”.

Noting that Brennan’s guilty plea helped expedite proceedings Judge Desmond Zaidan chose not to extend his present sentence, despite handing down a five-month sentence for the drug driving, and a consecutive five months for the dangerous driving from that date, 11 November.

The judge did, however, tack on a six-year driving ban for having no insurance in April.
