Athy flood relief meeting taking place today

Flooding in Athy in 2009
A further public meeting on the proposed new Athy Flood Relief System will take place today (Thursday).
This second public participation event is described as a “mid-stage consultation event” that aims to give an overview of the project and proposed flood relief measures.
The event will take place at Athy Community Library between 12pm-7pm on Thursday.
The event is an opportunity for people to share their experiences of flooding locally and their views on the scheme.
Organisers are looking for input from the public and local stakeholders about any issues or constraints that might affect the scheme.
A newsletter about the project has been made available online and can be viewed here.

The latest newsletter published in July said pre-liminary ground investigations have begun, which involved slit-trenching, trial pits and boreholes along with environmental surveys and hydrological analysis.
The aim is to protect homes better and reduce flood risk.
The council and OPW are looking at Natural Water Retention Measures like wetlands, reforested areas and restored floodplains to absorb rainfall and reduce run off.
Following the next public consultation, potential options will be refined to identify an emerging preferred option.
A further public participation day will take place late his year or early in 2026.
