A long-standing family-owned supermarket in Kildare has cited increasing costs as one of the reasons for closure.

Perry’s on Athy’s Leinster Street confirmed on Friday that they will cease trading on New Year’s Eve, describing it as a ‘privilege’ to serve the local community.

The business, which has served the town of Athy for over 70 years, has been an ever-present fixture for many locally.

In a statement released by Stuart Perry of Perry’s he said: ‘The decision was a very difficult one to make on many levels. Given the ever increasing costs and the continuous pressures on turnover from local and online options available today the investment required to upgrade, modernise, help sustain and grow the business just could not be financially justified.

‘Over the past few months efforts have been made to see if it is possible to sell the business as a going concern to any interested third parties, to help continue and keep the business in the town and help save as many jobs as possible. To date this has not been successful, but we will still endeavour to pursue all possible options.

‘We thank all our customers for their support, loyalty and who chose to shop with us over the years. Also to thank so many for their recent kind words which has meant more to us than we could ever properly express.

‘As our final trading date will be Wednesday 31 December please remember that all customer loyalty points and vouchers will need to be redeemed before that date. All Saving Club monies if not redeemed will be reimbursed before that date to the relevant Saving Club customers.

‘On behalf of the Perry family and all the staff members within the shop thank you again. It has been privilege.’
