PLANS for a major upgrade of Pettit’s Supermarket in Edmund Square in Athy have been revealed with a planning application lodged to Kildare County Council.

The plan was to build two, two-storey extensions at either end of the existing store on the river side – one at the northern end of 222m² for stock and cold storage, to replace the existing 94m² cold room, which is to be demolished.

The other is at the southern, or bridge side of the supermarket at 140m², comprising of an extension to the existing off-licence and additional staff amenities.

The plan also included an upgrade of all building façades and associated site works, and was submitted by Michael Sheridan Engineering and Design in Westport, Co Mayo on 22 January.

However, despite including a 37-page Flood Assessment Report, very quickly planners at Kildare County Council found some technical flaws with the application.

It was thus returned as ‘invalid’ to Sheridan’s literally a day later on 23 January listing the five main issues at fault – all of them breaches of either S22 or S23 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001.

First up, the site notice was incorrect, and must be displayed at a scale of 1:1,000. Also, elevation and section drawings were omitted whilst required to show the principal dimensions (including overall height), and should be in metric measurements.

The planners also demanded plans and elevation drawings of the structures to be demolished be included as well, and the application fee was short by €38.80, when it should have been €1,383.20. They also noted the land ownership boundary extends to include part of the River Barrow, and would require the inclusion of folio maps for this.

It is expected that planning will be resubmited.
