Barrow navigation ‘is closed’

Concerns about the River Barrow

“ESSENTIALLY, the Barrow navigation is closed,” stated the chief executive of Carlow County Council Coilín O’Reilly.

At the May meeting of Carlow County Council, cllr Michael Doran spoke of the “disappointment” felt in Leighlinbridge and Bagenalstown, when a heritage boat in Carlow town was unable to get any further than Milford on its River Barrow trip.

“I know there is a Bord Pleanála application there, but this is very serious and is preventing things happening on the River Barrow … it’s a big blow,” he said.

“In fact, you’d have to say that the Barrow Navigation will be closed if this continues, so is there any other avenue we can pursue to get the sandbanks removed?” added cllr Doran.

“Essentially, the Barrow navigation is closed,” stated chief executive Coilín O’Reilly.

“I don’t think there is anything that can be done in advance of that planning application,” Mr O’Reilly confirmed.
