The Group 3 Denny Cordell Lavarack & Lanwades Stud Stakes for fillies and mares produced a gripping finish at Gowran Park on Saturday, and one that delivered a spectacular result for Kildare jockey/trainer duo Scott McCullagh and Danny McLoughlin.
McCullagh guided massive outsider Syzygy to a narrow victory, despite hugely prohibitive odds of 80/1.
Owned and bred by Andrew Davis, he finished a short head in front of the 50-1 runner-up Pollenca, trained by Andy Slattery.
Full credit to McLoughlin who has done very well in black type races this year with fillies. From seven winners overall for his stable this term, three have come at Group 3 level with Syzygy joining Duckadilly and Magny Cours.
“I have to thank Danny for the opportunity to ride this mare and to win on her is brilliant. She is gutsy and the soft ground brought about loads of improvement,” McCullagh said.
McLoughlin added: “Scott is my best friend and when he's on them, it's all the better. He's someone I rate very highly as a rider, but he just doesn't get the chances. It's brilliant to have him on board today, it makes it that bit more special.”
