Thompson's Crossing near Kilcullen

A contractor is to carry out cutout and resurfacing repairs at Thompson's Cross, outside Kilcullen, for Kildare County Council. This follows a request by Cllr Tracey O'Dwyer to do more than just patch the potholes.

At the July meeting of the Kildare-Newbridge Municipal District, the councillor detailed the effects on the junction from the sheer volume of traffic, including HGVs which can lose bits of their sand and gravel load there, adding to the issue of potholes.

Cllr O'Dwyer described the junction as a 'very busy gateway' to Newbridge for traffic coming from the south. "It's in a really bad state," she said. "It needs a better job than just patching potholes."

The report to the councillors motion at the meeting confirmed that the repairs will be carried out 'subject to budget'.

"The road has already been patched up to within an inch of its life and I believe the section requires an overlay rather than patching up," the councillor told the meeting. "It was great to receive confirmation from the area engineer that the municipal district office will be appointing an external contractor in the coming weeks."
