Blow for Kildare as Beirne to miss Cavan showdown

Kildare will be without their 2025 Player of the Year Alex Beirne for Sunday’s crucial clash against Cavan after his appeal to get the red card he was shown during Saturday’s defeat to Derry was thrown out,
Beirne was dismissed in the 25th minute of that game after an incident that left Derry centre back Gareth McKinless on the ground. However, video shown on RTÉ’S League Sunday programme seemed to suggest that Beirne did very little wrong.
Speaking in the immediate aftermath of the game, Kildare manager Brian Flanagan seemed confident of winning the appeal.
“From our point of view and from talking to Alex there wasn’t a whole lot in that and the reaction (of the Derry player) was what the reaction was but we didn’t see a whole lot. We’ll review properly now in the next few hours but at this point we’ll still be hopeful of overturning that,” he said.
Kildare’s options in attack were bolstered during the Derry game as Darragh Kirwan and Neil Flynn returned to action from the bench after injury, and both will be in contention to replace Beirne for Sunday’s game in Cavan. Even so, being without last year’s top scorer is a hammer blow for a game of this importance.
