Bushfield Farm hosts open-air concert for Athy Union of Parishes

A large crowd attended the ‘Songs at Sunset’ outdoor concert in aid of Athy Union of Parishes

BUSHFIELD Farm hosted a special music event, which brought the community together for a cosy evening on hay bales under the summer sky.

‘Songs at Sunset’, a heartwarming open-air concert, was held on the Bushfield family farm, Kilkea in support of Athy Union of Parishes on Sunday, June 6.

Organised by farmer/actor Adam Goodwin and his family, the event drew an estimated crowd of 120 people.

“There was a great turnout,” said Adam. “We had a great time. I was surprised how well it went.” The concert featured acclaimed local talents, soprano Nora King from Naas and Celtic Tenor member James Nelson, who were accompanied by pianist Anne Cullen.

Community spirit was in full display. Wine was served thanks to the generous support of Neil Perry, and flowers were donated by Carol Barry of Bouquets N Baskets in Athy.

Sound was expertly managed by Robert Dancy and specially-prepared straw bales were provided by Ernest Casey.

Among the many local guests was the beloved Anna May McHugh, managing director of the National Ploughing Association, who attended and enjoyed the show.

“It’s good to get communities together. It gets everybody involved, which is a nice thing,” concluded Adam.

The concert concluded before nightfall and without a drop of rain—just as hoped. While final fundraising totals are still being tallied, Adam noted that previous events raised around €1,500 for the parish, and this year’s total is expected to be similar or higher.
