Thr extension of bus links for college students in Castledermot was a topic up for debate at the most recent Athy Municipal District meeting.

Cllr Vera-Louise Behan brought the motion before the council asking that it writes to JJ Kavanagh and Sons requesting its Carlow to Maynooth bus to stop in Castledermot to facilitate students from Athy MD who need to commute to Maynooth University.

“We should encourage this,” she said.

Cllr Behan explained that with the lack of student accommodation, public transport is very important for commuters.

“It would be very helpful for students in the area. The demand is there for this,” she said.

Cllr Brian Dooley suggested getting in touch with local link and said: “We know how successful local link has been in the last few years. We should look to incorporate our local link.”

Cllr Ivan Keatley added: “It’s an opportunity for us to work with private operators and public operators. Write to JJ Kavanagh and local link and see how we can coordinate this better.”
