Call for more benches in Naas

Kildare County Council will give consideration to age-friendly seating in Naas following calls from a local councillor.

Cllr Ger Dunne brought forward a motion at the most recent meeting of Naas Municipal District proposing that the council provides ‘suitable age friendly seating at the green area on the Newbridge Road, Naas at the front of Devoy Terrace’.

Acting senior park and landscaping officer Simon Wallace issued the council’s written response, stating that the age-friendly seating will be considered for the 2027 parks works programme.

The official response applied the caveat that the council will need to ensure that residents do not have any objections to the seating, and that it agrees on a location or locations with the residents before giving any further consideration to the proposal.

Cllr Dunne told the meeting that he has been visiting the area recently and that residents have been asking for such benches to be installed, with complaints that there is a lack of outdoor seating for elderly people in the area while they are walking to and from local supermarkets.

Supporting the argument, cllr Bill Clear noted that benches in Monread Park are “hugely used”.

Cllr Dunne also asked the council to consider the installation of “chatty benches”, an idea he proposed earlier this year.
