A PROPOSAL to explore the development of a South Kildare Cycle Route has been brought forward to Kildare County Council at the most recent Athy Municipal District meeting.

Cathaoirleach Ivan Keatley tabled a motion calling on the council to carry out a feasibility study for a cycling route that would link communities across the municipal district and provide greater access to amenities throughout South Kildare.

In response, Daragh Conlan, acting senior executive engineer with the council’s projects team, confirmed that the study will proceed once a suitable funding source is identified.

Cllr Keatley emphasised the importance of a cycle route, particularly along the Blueway, and with a view to “take cyclists and walkers off busier roads”.

Another point included by cllr Keatley was the necessity of connecting up cycle links in the municipal district, making reference to the controversial Moone-Timolin cycle track.
