A COUNCILLOR is to bring a number of motions to deal with the raised kerbs on the Kilcullen Road cyclepath after a number of falls by elderly Naas residents.
Cllr Bill Clear said: “Councillors have had reports of a number of people tripping and falling on the Kilcullen Road on these raised kerbs... I’m getting constantly reminded on social media.
“I’ve even seen a woman in her 70s fall and cut her head. My request is that these verges by painted in a high-visibility colour, I’ve asked for red.
“At every turn we’ve been told by the council engineers that these are standard, and I want to know by what standard?
“Anywhere there are businesses and retail we should have these raised kerbs painted to differentiate from the grey.
“There have been too many issues with elderly people. There is a fundamental difference about these, and they should’ve been painted a different colour.
“Why put them in if people are falling and getting hurt? Something is fundamentally wrong.
“There are regulations that state that in an area of business and retail these raised kerbs should be painted different colours. They need to be delineated,” he concluded.
Another recent incident saw a man in his 70s trip over the kerb onto the road in front of the traffic. He was left with a gash and swelling to his knee.
Kildare County Council was contacted for a comment, but has not replied as of yet.
