“VERY pleased with the results, they’re very good… very good across the board, but particularly Music and Physics.” So said Eric Gaughran, Principal of Coláiste Lorcáin in Castledermot, of how their outgoing sixth-year students fared in this year’s Leaving Cert.
A total of 40 students there sat the Leaving this year, with Aideen Stein and Michael Hanbury the top two students.
Aideen, who was there for two years, scored a fantastic 601 points, earning four H1s. Mr Gaughran noted that Michael received an academic award every year he was in the school – six years.
There were plenty more great results across the board – the Castledermot principal referenced students like Luke Kavanagh “who got a very good Leaving Cert and will be doing an apprenticeship… there's about three or four of them will go and do apprenticeships, they're well set-up – they've very good results in Maths which will obviously stand to them as they go through the apprenticeship route.”
As can often be the case these days, not many students opted to come into the school last Friday morning.
“One of the disadvantages of the online system is that we don't always see them,” Mr Gaughran said. “I miss that, I'm 24 years in this job and I kind of miss that, because you also miss the chance to say 'well done' to the kids and you also miss the chance to be supportive of a student who might have done very well but who might be a little bit disappointed... we miss that personal connection, having been with them for six years.”
He added: “Well done to them all and, as always, best of luck in their future and they're always welcome to come back if we can help them or support them or advise them, or even just to let us know... how they're getting on.”
