Council developing app to report Kildare bridge collisions

KILDARE County Council is developing a “bridge strike” app that will allow members of the public and local councillors to report issues related to bridges in the county.

The news emerged at the most recent meeting of Athy Municipal District (MD), where cllr Veralouise Behan proposed that the council carries out a bridge survey in the MD, citing several stone bridges in need of repair.

Acting senior engineer on the projects team, Daragh Conlan, issued the council’s response, which revealed that the app is currently in development.

The response also stated that the council received €26,100 from the Department of Transport to carry out bridge inspections across Kildare, with inspections taking place every week. It was detailed that 36 inspections have been completed so far this year, out of 100 scheduled inspections.

Mr Conlan’s report further explained that there are at least 2,000 locations on the council’s Pavement Management System (PMS) that need to be surveyed. The projects team is working through the list to identify locations for inspection, as well as engaging with each MD to “identify structures for inclusion in future inspections.”

It was added that the council carries out inspections across the county but “does not have the resources to focus on one Municipal District at a time”.

Speaking at the meeting, cllr Behan said that there is a problem with bridges being struck by cars.

The councillor described the council's a “step forward”.
