A public survey has been launched to investigate the potential provision of a recreation trail between Naas, Newbridge and Kilcullen, via the Corbally Canal and the River Liffey Valley.

The ‘Corbally Canal’ stretches between the Newbridge Road in Naas and Corbally Harbour, just south of the M9 and halfway between Two Mile House and Newbridge.

It covers approximately eight kilometres of waterway, while the River Liffey – just a kilometre west - between Newbridge Bridge and Kilcullen Bridge extends to 10km.

If developed, this would provide a recreational amenity that would benefit Naas, Newbridge, Athgarvan, Kilcullen and the wider area.

The Corbally Canal and Harbour area itself, also has the potential to be developed as a Blueway, “if strict criteria are met”, according to a council spokesperson.

A feasibility study, set to be finished in 2025, has commenced with JBA Consulting, and will evaluate the opportunity and deliverability of the proposed recreational project.

The project is supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS).

This provides for the development of projects to provide for new outdoor recreational infrastructure or the enhancement of existing infrastructure, to contribute to healthy active lifestyles.

It also supports the economic and tourism potential of the area for both local communities and visitors alike. The development of any proposal will take account of a broad range of considerations, including biodiversity and environmental quality.

The council is seeking feedback from individuals in the Naas, Newbridge, Athgarvan and Kilcullen areas, and the survey will close on Wednesday, 2 January 2025.
