A man whose allegedly unlicensed greyhound bit a passerby failed to turn up in court, and so will have to return in January to have his case heard.

Listed for an appearance in Athy District Court was a James Carthy (44), with an address at Ardrew Halting Site in the town.

He is being charged of having an uncontrolled dog, and not having a valid licence for it at Dun Bhroin on 17 August, 2020.

“He says he didn’t own the dog. Initially, he told gardaí that it was his dog, then said the next day that it wasn’t,” said Sergeant Dave Hanrahan.

Carthy’s solicitor Jacqui McManus told the court that “a lady from the ISPCA confirmed he didn’t own the dog”.

“Nobody was put in danger here?” asked Judge Desmond Zaidan.

“A member of the public got bitten on the leg,” revealed the sergeant.

“Just minding her own business. Was the dog put down?” asked the judge.

“I think so,” said Sgt Hanrahan, before the judge re-fixed the next hearing for 28 January.
