Expensive takeaway for confused driver

The driver mistakenly thought the exit pictured was the drive thru entrance and got a €120 fine

A QUICK stop for some late night food in Portlaoise became very expensive, when gardaí served up a whopper of a fine.

The chips were down at the Supermac’s drive thru, when a confused visitor drove through an exit instead of an entrance. He was immediately served with a €120 penalty notice.

The driver contends that there should be a ‘No Entry’ sign on the Laois Shopping Centre side of Supermac’s, as he feels it is extremely confusing, particularly at night.

The motorist sent a photo (above) to the Laois Nationalist, showing the view from the roundabout outside the shopping centre.

He said: ‘I thought it was the entrance to the Supermac’s drive thru, because of the lit-up sign on the right. I found it very confusing, due to poor signage and visibility coming from the Tesco direction.

‘It was very misleading, especially as there are no signs or road markings saying ‘No Entry’. I feel it was a very small mistake on my end, due to the lack of road markings and misleading information provided.’

The entrance and exit for the drive thru are both located opposite Laois County Council headquarters, just off James Fintan Lalor Avenue.

There is also an exit onto the Laois Shopping Centre roundabout for people leaving the Supermac’s car park, which this driver mistakenly thought was the entrance.

After his costly takeaway, he wants to know: ‘Am I in the wrong or has anyone else had this issue?’
