Funding talks ongoing for second bridge project in Newbridge

DISCUSSIONS are continuing between Kildare County Council and the Department of Transport regarding funding for proposed second bridge projects in Newbridge.

The proposed second bridge at Great Connell, Newbridge has been a piece of infrastructure badly needed to address one of the most repetitive issues in the area traffic.

At the December meeting of the Kildare–Newbridge Municipal District, cllr Chris Pender sought an update on all communications between the council and the Department of Transport in relation to the proposed second bridge for Newbridge and the Southern Orbital Route project. He also asked for clarification on progress in securing funding and the current status of the project.

In a written response, acting senior engineer with the council’s Projects Team, Daragh Conlan, said discussions with the department are ongoing with a view to securing funding to progress the project. He added that a further update would be provided in 2026 following the release of funding allocations for the coming year.

A similar response was issued to a separate question from cllr Noel Heavey, who requested an update on the delivery schedule for the bridge.

Cllr Heavey concluded that he would request a report updating members on the progress of the project in the upcoming January meeting.
