Gardaí investigate sexual assault report in Athy
The incident is alleged to have occurred in the early hours of 18 March
GARDAÍ are investigating the alleged sexual assault of a young woman in Athy which is alleged to have occurred in March.
The young lady has met with investigators on a number of occasions about the incident which is alleged to have taken place close to the town centre.
The Kildare Nationalist understands that a male was arrested on 20 May, questioned and released under garda caution, while a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
“Gardaí responded to reports of an assault in the Athy area of Co. Kildare on the 18 March in the early hours of the morning, and investigations are ongoing,” said an official Garda spokesperson this week (25 May), but would not comment any further whilst the case is still active.
The Kildare Nationalist was contacted by a relative of the adult teen.
“Gardaí were notified, and an ambulance brought her to hospital for a forensic examination and a rape kit,” said the relative.
“They guy was arrested last Wednesday, questioned and released. He was not known to the victim,” she said.
The woman said her relative and her family are “going through hell”.
“She (the victim) is OK, better now, some days good, some days bad.”
“I’ve spoken with investigators on the day he was arrested, and they said details have been sent to the DPP, but it could be a few months if he is to be prosecuted," said the woman.
