A MAN who allegedly assaulted a woman with a frying pan after a 10-day drinking binge finally turned up in court this week (10 September) after missing three previous dates to do so.
Martin Moore (62), with an address at The Moat, Ardscull, Athy was due before Athy District Court to face a charge of assault causing harm (Section 3) on an unnamed woman at a given address in the town on the night of 24 April, 2021.
He first appeared in court on 23 November, 2022, remanded then until on 25 April, 2023 – when he first failed to show up, and was given his first bench warrant.
He had a second bench warrant issued for him after he failed to show up at another appointed court appearance on 25 June this year, and a third for failing to appear on 15 August.
“It is alleged this man had been on a drinking binge for 10 days,” explained Sergeant Brian Jacob for the State 25 April last year.
"She was cooking when he came home, he took the pan, threw the contents to the floor and assaulted her with it, breaking her spectacles. The lady did make a full recovery, but it was a scary incident,” he said.
This week his colleague Sergeant Dave Hanrahan clarified: “She received bruising to her head and body”.
At this point, Mr Moore made an attempt to address the court, but his solicitor Jackie McManus interjected quickly: “It’s probably not a good idea to talk today”.
Judge Desmond Zaidan had previously accepted jurisdiction in the case and would deal with it in the district court. He remanded Moore on continuing bail until 28 January to hear the case in full.
“Was there a relationship between them?” he asked at the end.
“She was staying in his house before moving to a new one,” said Garda Derek Maher.
