Judge revokes woman’s free legal aid after learning she had paid 'butt lift'

A FREE legal aid certificate was revoked after Judge Andrew Cody learned that a defendant had undergone cosmetic surgery shortly after obtaining approval for the certificate.
Portlaoise District Court heard that the defendant had cosmetic procedures that included a tummy tuck, butt lift and liposuction.
The matter came to light when a Portarlington woman failed to appear last week after informing the court that “she was still recovering from cosmetic surgery.” The woman who cannot be identified by order of the judge, had been due in court to answer to the offence of the theft of a €200 of a supersonic hairdryer from Fletcher’s Hardware, Link Road, Portarlington on 2 January last year.
Judge Cody noted that solicitor for the defendant Aonghus McCarthy had been successful in his application, at the first sitting of the case, to obtain a free legal aid certificate for his client.
However, after the certificate was approved, Judge Cody noted that the defendant had undergone cosmetic surgery abroad that included: “Liposuction, tummy tuck and a butt lift.” He said he was revoking the free legal certificate that had been approved to solicitor Aonghus McCarthy and adjourned the case to 17 September of Portlaoise District Court.
