Kildare bridge to get safety improvements
Farmers and hauliers encounter difficulty when facing oncoming traffic
Kildare County Council is finalising plans for safety measures at Kilkea Bridge.
At the most recent meeting of Athy Municipal District, cllr Mark Leigh asked for an update on safety measures at the bridge.
Senior engineer Daragh Conlan issued the council’s written response, stating that the local authority is ‘currently finalising proposals for measures on either side of the bridge’ and hopes to share the proposals once the design work is complete.
Speaking at the meeting, cllr Leigh noted that an on-site meeting took place in January.
At that month’s meeting of the municipal district, cllr Leigh brought forward a motion requesting that ‘the council implements traffic calming measures at Kilkea Bridge due to its narrow, historic structure and repeated collisions/ bridge strikes’.
Cllr Leigh told that meeting that the issue had “become a matter of genuine concern to the community”, mentioning a petition signed by 200 local residents. He noted that farmers and hauliers encounter difficulty when facing oncoming traffic.
