KILDARE County Council has said it has no objection to council tenants installing video doorbells, provided prior permission is obtained and strict conditions are met.

The issue was raised by Kildare-Newbridge MD cllr Noel Connolly, who asked whether the council had any concerns about tenants installing video doorbells in the municipal district, similar to issues recently highlighted by Waterford City and County Council.

In response, the council confirmed that the installation of a video doorbell is considered an alteration to a property. However, tenants may install such devices once they seek and receive prior approval from the Housing Maintenance Section.

The council stated that video doorbells, including Ring-type devices, must be positioned so that footage does not extend beyond the curtilage of the tenant’s individual property.

Devices must not be directed towards public roads or interfere with neighbouring properties.

Kildare County Council also highlighted data protection responsibilities, noting that tenants who install video doorbells become data controllers.

As such, they are advised to consult the Data Protection Commission’s website to ensure full compliance with data protection legislation.

It included that An Garda Síochána and Tenant Liaison Officers recommend their use as an effective crime-prevention measure.
